Abstract

Pesticides are one of the major components used in modern agriculture. Pesticides are the chemicals used to control or kill the pest species, which may include the wild species of plants also. In 2013, the world’ pesticide production was estimated at 5.2 million tonnes and its usage is increasing day by day. Uncontrolled usage of pesticides in agricultural sector accounted for the presence of their residues mainly organophosphates, in various environmental matrices. Pesticides are used to increase crop yields, can be applied either directly or indirectly and their residue may accumulate not only in crops, but also in soil surface water and other environmental matrices.
