MICRO-FINANCE & WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS: ANALYSING THE ROLE OF SMALL LOANS IN STARTING HOME-BASED BUSINESSES
Abstract
Abstract: This research report presents an exhaustive analysis of the microfinance ecosystem in India, specifically examining its efficacy as a catalyst for women-led home-based entrepreneurship. Against the backdrop of a burgeoning market projected to expand from USD 7.3 billion in 2025 to USD 17.7 billion by 2034, the study interrogates the structural, financial, and socio-cultural dynamics that govern the relationship between small loans and enterprise formation. Utilizing a secondary data analysis methodology grounded in high-impact industry reports (MFIN, Sa-Dhan, SIDBI), government performance metrics (NRLM, PMMY), and Scopus-indexed academic literature, the report synthesizes a multi-dimensional view of the sector. The analysis reveals that while microfinance has successfully democratized access to capital—reaching over 6.5 crore active borrowers, 97% of whom are women—the transition from subsistence-level borrowing to sustainable, growth-oriented entrepreneurship remains fraught with challenges. The "Missing Middle" financing gap, patriarchal constraints on agency, and recent asset quality stress in key states like Karnataka and Odisha emerge as critical bottlenecks. Conversely, the digital transformation of the sector, evidenced by 27 million women actively monitoring their credit scores as of 2025, signals a paradigm shift toward greater financial autonomy. The report concludes with a forward-looking assessment for 2026, advocating for a "credit-plus" approach that integrates financial services with market linkages and skill development to foster genuine economic empowerment.
